Given the choices available why would someone opt for traditional liposuction instead of new liposuction which is laser assisted?
Traditional liposuction has been performed for over twenty years so more is known about the drawbacks of this form of surgery. The fact that some doctors have concerns over the impact of the fatty acids released by the new laser assisted liposuction will mean that some patients feel more comfortable having the older and more tested treatment. Ordinary liposuction is cheaper than the new laser assisted liposuction. If you are on a budget and have a lot of stubborn fat areas to treat, you are likely to opt for the older surgery. You can afford to get more areas treated than you would do if you went for laser and spent the same amount of dollars.
But one of the main drawbacks of traditional liposuction is that it has to be performed under general anesthetic. This can often be the most dangerous part of any surgical procedure. Some people have no problems with anesthetics while others can take weeks to recover from them. Also with the traditional treatment there is considerable bleeding, swelling and pain. The recovery time is a lot longer and this can mean taking extra time out from your normal life i.e. time away from work etc.
There is also an increased risk with this older treatment that the end result won't be quite what you were looking for. Sure you will lose the fat but this can result in sagging skin in some patients. If this happens to you, you will be very disappointed having effectively swooped one beauty problem for another i.e. fat deposits for saggy skin.
New laser assisted liposuction is so much more convenient and the results are usually much easier to determine. You do not run the same risks of ending up with sagging skin as the laser causes your body to release collagen.
Collagen is the tissue strengthener that helps to keep our skin taut. You only need a local anesthetic so there is no worry about any side effects caused by a general one. The amount of bleeding and subsequent swelling and pain is significantly reduced due in part to the heat from the laser cauterizing the wounds and also the fact that the procedure itself is so much less invasive. Traditional liposuction always involves suctioning the fat cells out of the body whereas with laser assisted liposuction it depends on the size and location of the site being treated. So is there any downside to the new laser assisted liposuction surgery? Well it is more expensive and being a newer treatment the long term effects on your health are less well known.
Both types of liposuction offer a permanent result which is a huge attraction for those who have tried everything but failed to remove stubborn fatty deposits from their bodies.
