If you are struggling to lose weight from certain areas of your body, you may be considering liposuction.  Or perhaps you have always been interested in this procedure but the reported pain, swelling and other side effects associated with it made it less attractive.   Laser liposuction has recently been introduced into the United States and the level of interest in this new laser fat busting procedure is high.

Liposuction is the removal of fat from your body using suction. Small incisions are made in the area that is being treated and small tubes are inserted into these holes.  The fat is then ‘vacuumed’ out of your body via these tubes.  The benefit of this procedure is that once removed the fat cells do not return to the treated area.  But it comes at a price and not just a financial one. Patients suffer pain and trauma to the localized area with bruising and swelling being very common.  Some patients will also be left with sagging skin after the fat cells have been taken away with liposuction.
But the medical industry has been working to improve the effectiveness of this treatment and one such improvement is the introduction of laser assisted liposuction.  This laser liposuction method of fat busting surgery is new to the US but has been used in Europe and South Africa for a number of years.

Although a very basic explanation, what happens is that doctors will use the laser to heat and thus dissolve the fat cells in the area undergoing treatment.   This liquid fat is much easier to suction out of the body than the fat cells in the more traditional form of non-assisted liposuction.

Laser liposuction works by inserting a laser tipped probe, which is almost four times thinner than the traditional canula used with ordinary liposuction, under the skin.  The heat from the laser melts the fat which is then suctioned away.  But as a side effect, when the body feels the heat from the laser, it stimulates the production of collagen.  Collagen is the connective tissue which helps to prevent the skin from sagging.  At the same time the laser will stop bleeding from the tissue and blood vessels in this area thus reducing swelling and bleeding.

The combined effect of less swelling and more collagen means that the laser treated area will look smoother and will continue to improve over the next few months.  Fans of this laser liposuction treatment quote the reduced recovery time and better results as proof it works.  Those less in favor have raised questions about the long term impact on your health from the free fatty acids released during the treatment.

Whatever your personal view, the fact is that laser assisted liposuction has proved to be a very popular form of treatment and interest is likely to continue for some time to come.
