If you suffer from cellulite, you will know from experience how difficult it is to get rid of this dimpled ‘orange peel’ skin. In fact there are few treatments as effective as surgery for cellulite reduction but not everyone wants to go under the knife. Reports of pain, bruising and swelling as well as being left with saggy skin afterwards have turned some people off traditional liposuction.
There is now another FDA approved option available in the form of laser assisted liposuction. This procedure is more expensive than the traditional method but it may have fewer side effects at least in the short term. Patients who have undergone this form of treatment consistently report lower levels of swelling or bruising and better long term results. But as this procedure has only been in use over the last ten years or so, you need to take long term with a grain of salt. Ten years is not long in medical terms and certainly isn’t long enough to be able to quantify any potential adverse effects on your health from this type of procedure. It has, however, proven very effective for cellulite reduction treatments.
So how does it work and what makes it so different? Under the traditional form of liposuction, actual fat cells are suctioned out of your body via tubes inserted by canulas under the skin. In laser assisted liposuction, laser tipped probes are inserted instead of canulas. As these probes are about four times slimmer, it immediately lessens the impact on your skin and pain levels. The laser heats the fat cells which in turn melt. It is this melted material that is suctioned away. But the heat from the laser also has two other side effects. The first is that heat has been used for centuries to cauterize wounds and reduce bleeding and this happens during this treatment. The less bleeding and swelling involved in any operation the quicker the recovery time.
The second side effect is one that patients adore. The heat stimulates your body to produce collagen. As it is a lack of collagen that can cause cellulite in the first place as this is the connective tissue holding your skin together, the very fact that laser assisted liposuction causes an increase in the collagen cells is a benefit. The result is less sagging of your skin so it immediately looks smoother and these results only improve over the next four to six months. So the laser assisted liposuction procedures actually act as cellulite reduction treatments. You can probably see why it has become so popular. It is less painful, has less obvious side effects and the result is smoother skin.
Why wouldn’t everyone be a fan?
Well, most people are, but there are some concerns amongst certain doctors. These medics point to the fact that the procedure being relatively new hasn’t been proven effective in the long term. There may be health issues involved as well. Your liver has to deal with the fatty acids released by laser assisted liposuction. I guess the debate in medical circles will continue for some time. In the meantime there are no indications that the public have any issue with laser assisted liposuction and if they can afford it and need it, they will probably avail of it. This form of cellulite reduction treatments is proving to be quite effective.
